CHAPTER NINETEEN

After popping back into Quincy’s to tell Rogue where I was going, I left with Hex in search of my twin flame. Hex’s bright orange Camaro wasn’t quite the ride I’d have pictured for him, but seeing him behind the wheel, it kind of worked.

Hex’s black hair flopped into his frosty blue eyes, forcing him to shove a hand through it. He wore a sleeveless Clash shirt and ripped black jeans with a studded bracelet on one wrist. He always possessed this deadly vibe that was somehow also sexy as sin. I couldn’t help but sneak a few ogling glances at him as he drove.

Too bad it wasn’t enough to keep my mind off Arsen. It didn’t help that we had to keep stopping so I could feel him out. Tapping into my light flame came easy. Scary easy. All I had to do was focus on that invisible cord that linked us and follow it right to him. By car it was harder but not impossible.

At one point we overshot the right area and had to backtrack several blocks. When finally the heat scorched through me, alerting me to Arsen’s presence like a beacon, I knew we had the right place. Woody’s Pub. A tiny watering hole on a downtown side street.

Arsen knew I was there by the time I stepped foot inside. Sitting at the bar of a small, quaint pub with only a handful of other patrons, he glanced up when I entered. The expectant expression he wore shifted into surprise and then suspicion when he saw Hex a few steps behind me.

“What’s going on, Stanzi?” Looking between Hex and me, Arsen stood up. “Was having one of your vampires break my nose not enough?”

Inwardly I cringed. His nose did look pretty bad. The bruising had spread across one side of his face.

“I’m not here because of Stanzi,” Hex said, his relaxed demeanor a direct contrast to my stiff posture. “I’m here because The Circle sent me. We should probably move this outside.”

To my surprise, Arsen scoffed and turned back to the bar. “That was fast. Just let me finish my drink.”

Hex waited patiently near the door while I unsuccessfully tried not to look like I was shitting my pants. What happened with Rogue and Arsen had scared me a little, but it had been nothing more than male ego driven punches. This was different. This was one sided pain and punishment.

Arsen drank back the rest of the amber liquid in his glass in one swallow and followed us without hesitation. Once we emerged outside he surged ahead, keeping his distance from me.

“What do they know?” Arsen asked, tossing the question over his shoulder at Hex.

Arsen came to a stop several yards away from the pub. Aside from us and one guy that exited the pub and went in the opposite direction, nobody else was around. I kept my distance despite the demand to touch him. Seeing him twice in one night was messing with my head.
